Child Conversation Starters
What should I talk about with my child?
Good topics of conversation involve what the child is studying in school, hobbies, pets, similar interests (such as, my favorite color is blue too!). Please refrain from discussing political or economic issues of either country.
The children in IGL-sponsored homes celebrate many of the same Christian-based holidays that we celebrate in the U.S. So ask about Christmas and Easter celebrations and traditions.
Give me some examples.
- What’s your favorite subject in school?
- Do you like to read? What books have you read?
- I liked to play checkers when I was your age. What games do you and your friends like to play?
- I see your favorite food is Idli – mine is pizza. What other foods do you like?
- My family and I went to the park yesterday. Do you like to play outside?
- We have a dog and a cat. Do you have any pets?
- Are you excited about the Christmas holiday next month? How do you celebrate Christmas?
What pictures are appropriate to send to my child?
If sending pictures of yourself and your family, please ensure clothing, jewelry, etc. is of a conservative nature. The children love pictures of families, pets and other children their own ages. They also like to see you in action – so send shots of your family on a trip, playing with the family dog or playing a boardgame at the kitchen table.
What gifts are appropriate for my child?
IGL provides a variety of gifts, birthday presents and school supplies for special events or holidays. When reviewing the Gift Catalog, please select from the Gift Items for Sponsored Children. Some gift suggestions are a birthday party, board games, stationery, football, necklace, etc.
